The Greatest Games – Peru 4 Austria 2

Olympics quarter-final, Stadion am Gesundbrunnen, Berlin, 8 August 1936

Saturday 14th September

In this week's Greatest Games in association with The Football Ramble, David Owen joins Jonathan and Marcus to look back to the 1936 Olympics quarter-final.

Played against a Nazi backdrop in Berlin, Peru would triumph on an upward curve of form that would eventually lead them to victory in the 1939 Copa América. Though things weren't quite this simple.

Following a pitch invasion of supposedly Peruvian supporters in an almost empty stadium, three Peruvian goals would be disallowed and the game eventually rescheduled. Not accepting this decision, Peru would withdraw entirely allowing the Austrians to advance in spite of defeat.
